Why Your Kid Isn’t Mentally Tough

And what parents can do about it

I’m pretty sure this article is going to tick off some parents. Despite that, I’m going to ask you to consider what I write on the off chance that it may, unfortunately, apply to you.

If it helps to know a little about my background so you know where this is coming from, I’m a professor of sport psychology. One of my areas of specialization is mental toughness.

In this article, I’m going to explain one reason some kids may lack mental toughness and one thing parents can do about it.

A reason some kids may lack mental toughness

Here’s one reason some kids don’t develop mental toughness: The parents try too hard.

I realize that parents don’t like hearing this, that a reason their kids may lack mental toughness is because of the way parents parent. I get that it probably irritates some of you readers to feel blamed for your kids’ lack of mental toughness, despite your best efforts.

You may be a bit resistant to learning that your kids’ lack of mental toughness might be due, in part, to your excessive effort, but, there you go.
