My Dates Ditched Me Because I Didn’t Text Back Soon Enough

Is this a reasonable expectation for people we meet via online dating?!

As the song goes, another one bites the dust. And another one gone, and another one gone.

A while back, I ‘met’ a man via an online dating website. After a week, he messaged me that I hadn’t responded to his texts soon enough, so he was going to move on. A while later, I met another man, and the same thing happened.

(Strangely, they both used that same phrase — moving on.)

Is this a thing in dating now? Is there some sort of clock running on how quickly we have to respond to texts or else we get kicked to the curb?

I agreed to meet the first guy on a Saturday. That week, he texted “Good morning!” to me every day.

I recognize many people consider that to be thoughtful. To me, such generic greetings can be a bit banal. Just text me when you’ve got something meaningful, interesting, or useful to say, but I’ll usually “Good morning” back because I understand some people need that.

His “Good morning!” texts usually popped up while I was driving to work. By the time I parked, I accidentally forgot to respond to a couple of them.
