Ignore the Details in Online Dating Profiles…
And set us all up for failure
After two months of dating, he said “I’m allergic to dogs”. A glob of wetness spurted from his red-rimmed eyes.
Geezus. Why did he pursue me if he knew he was allergic? Did he even read my online dating profile?
In my profile, I wrote, “My DOG owns me.” I wrote, “My DOG has been in my life for a decade, so he’s a pretty big deal to me.” I wrote, “Bonus if we can take my DOG with us on our adventures.”
I wanted to get to the bottom of this. I wanted to find out why people ignore the details in online dating profiles. More importantly, I wanted to let them know why we all need to pay attention to those details.
Why he ignored my online dating profile details
A first guess as to why he ignored what I wrote about my dog is because he didn’t read my profile. It’s not uncommon, I’ve heard, for people to send messages in online dating after only looking at someone’s photos.
Even so: There’s a photo of me and my dog hiking in Scotland (my dog has a European pet passport!). And there’s a photo of me shhhh-ing my dog because he was howling while I was teaching remotely from home.
