If you’re divorced and wonder whether you should get married again, plenty of people will tell you “Don’t do it, ya’ nimrod!”

I’m one of the divorced nimrods who is open to the idea of getting married again.

When calling us nimrods doesn’t discourage us from thinking we might want to get married, marriage bashers bring out the big guns. That’s when they whip out the divorce rates:

Over 40% of first marriages, 60% of second marriages, and 70% of third marriages end in divorce.

If I had some food, and I knew there was a 60% chance that my dog will swipe it if I set it on a low table near him, I’m probably going to re-think it.

So yeah, it seems like we should re-consider getting married since it’s so likely we’ll end up divorced.

But since I’m also a former law enforcement officer, I’m interested in motives.

Why are people so keen to point out the divorce rates?

Are they really trying to be helpful, to prevent us from making a horrible mistake? Or is something else going on?
