Two Times When It’s OK to Make the Person You Love Unhappy

Doing anything for love is a bad song lyric

“I’d do anything for love.” Meatloaf’s song lyric captured how we feel when we fall in love.

We feel almost compelled to cater to the people we love, to do anything it takes to make them happy.

When you feel that urge to make the person you love happy, it’s time to hit the pause button. It’s time to ask, “Should I do what it takes to make this person happy?”

Here are two times when it’s ok to make the person you love unhappy.

1. When what makes them happy is unhealthy for you

A man told me that if he met a woman, and she tended to wear high heels, he wouldn’t date her.

“Why not?” I asked.

“I just think that says a lot about her. Like she’s not practical. She’s doing something that can hurt her. For what? I just think it means she doesn’t make the best decisions.”

I swooned. Such consideration for a woman’s well-being is way more romantic than any poetry could ever be.

This guy was a bit of a unicorn though. Plenty of men I know like when women wear high heels.
